For a local service business, your Google Business Profile is arguably more important than your website: it's what shows in Maps, what displays your reviews, and what most customers see first. Here's the complete optimization checklist we run for every client.
Claim, verify, and lock down the basics
Claim the profile, verify ownership, and audit every field: exact business name (no keyword stuffing — Google suspends for it), address, phone, website, and hours including holidays. Inconsistency between your GBP and your website is the most common self-inflicted wound in local search.
Categories: the highest-leverage five minutes
Your primary category is the strongest single relevance signal you control. Choose the most specific one that fits ("HVAC contractor," not "Contractor"), then add every legitimate secondary category. Review these quarterly — Google adds new categories constantly.
Services and products
List every service with a description and, where possible, a price range. These feed matching for long-tail searches and pre-answer the questions that otherwise clog your phone.
Photos that aren't stock
Profiles with regular, authentic photos get dramatically more direction requests and calls. Real trucks, real crews, real completed jobs. Upload monthly at minimum; geotagged job-site photos are ideal.
Reviews: velocity over totals
A steady stream of recent reviews beats a big stale number. Systematize the ask — an automated request after every completed job — and respond to every review, positive or negative. Responses are ranking signals and trust signals at once.
Posts: the most neglected feature
Weekly GBP posts (offers, seasonal reminders, completed projects) keep your profile active. Almost nobody sustains this manually, which is exactly why our platform automates it — an easy edge over every competitor who posted twice in 2024.
Q&A: answer yourself first
Seed your own Q&A section with your ten most common questions and answer them. Otherwise, strangers will — sometimes wrongly.
The meta-lesson
Every item above is simple; none is hard; all of them decay without maintenance. GBP optimization isn't a project, it's a cadence. Win the cadence and you win the pack.
The same one that publishes to our clients' sites every week.
